Release of Family Ancestry Book

A new book -- Murray F. Coleman and Kathleen J. Steil: Family Ancestry -- is being released today -- the anniversary of their wedding which occurred on May 1, 1943.

"This book is the culmination of six years of extensive genealogy research," said Thomas F. Coleman, the book's author.  "It pulls together pieces of the ancestry puzzle that were previously not available to members of my immediate and extended families," he added.

The book shares with readers the results of visits to libraries and cemeteries, and many conversations and interviews of relatives, especially older family members.  The book makes available to this and future generations the stories of the ancestors and relatives of Murray F. Coleman and Kathleen J. Steil.

Reading the book will bring to life our German, Polish, Irish, and Scottish heritage.  The book contains many photos.  Information is included on our DNA and the locations of national origin.  It also contains information about our ancient paternal and maternal DNA and the migration paths of our ancient ancestors.

To access the table of contents to the 87-page book online, from which you can access individual chapters click here.  A printed and bound color copy can be purchased.  To order a copy, contact Thomas F. Coleman at

An essay on our Polish ancestry

After doing additional research on the ancestors of our grandmother, Catherine Julia Lukaschewski, I decided to write an essay to explain that her Polish ancestry was more limited than I originally believed.

Ladensack family tree expands

Anna H. Steil was the sister of my grandfather, Frank W. Steil.  She married John P. Ladensack and they had four children.  The Ladensacks and the Frys (a sub-branch of the Ladensack family) attended the Steil family reunions held at the cottage of Frank and his wife Catherine in Lake Orion, Michigan, in the 1950s.

With help from Barbara Fry, Beverly Fry, Mary Ladensack, Kurt Ladensack, and Beth Messacar, I was able to complete a family tree showing the descendents of Anna Steil and John Ladensack.  The newest addition to the family, Andrew James Fry, will be born on January 18, 2012.

I also had a delightful conversation with Barbara Fry who recalled visits to Bunny Run for the Steil Family Reunion in the 1970s as well as a wonderful visit she had with my mother, Kay Coleman, at her home on Dell Court.  This visit was just before Kay moved to Independence Village.

A Christmas Eve marriage during the Civil War

Calvert Coleman and Sarah Westfall married on December 24, 1863.  Their first child was born on September 25, 1864, so he may have been conceived on their wedding night.  Child number eight, Arthur Roy Coleman, was born 20 years later.

Their decision to marry and have children had major ramifications.  Hundreds of descendants would not have come into being were it not for that Christmas Eve wedding.

Interview of Clarice and Bob Coleman

I interviewed cousin Bob Coleman and his wife Clarice at their home in Longmont, Colorado, on September 28, 2011.

The two of them, with Clarice taking the lead, have worked for many years to research and report on the history of Calvert Coleman and Sarah Westfall, their ancestors, and their descendants.  Clarice published a book on the Coleman-Westfall ancestry in 2003.

For more information on my visit with Bob and Clarice, including access to an audio file of the interview, click here.

Photo of Ruth Coleman and Jenny Coleman Freer

Ruth Coleman was the second child born to Arthur Roy Coleman and Florence J. Curtis.  When Florence died shortly after giving birth to Ruth, Roy gave her up for adoption.  Ruth was adopted by Roy's sister Jenny Coleman and her husband Edgar Freer.  When I was visiting Clarice and Bob Coleman in Colorado earlier this year, I scanned this photo of Ruth and Jenny.  Click here for a larger photo.

Finally: A Grave Marker for Calvert Coleman

Thanks to donations from some family members, and with the help of Kathie Steigerwald at David C. Brown Funeral Home, our great grandfather Calvert Coleman now has a grave marker.

Information supplied by Clarice Coleman revealed that Calvert was buried in an unmarked grave at Hillside Cemetery in Belleville, Michigan.  So I took up a collection to purchase a marker for Calvert and several relatives made donations.

Visiting our cousins in Colorado

While Michael Vasquez and I were on vacation in Colorado in September, we drove to Longmont where we visited with cousin Bob Coleman and his wife Clarice.  Clarice provided us with a delicious lunch.

I interviewed Clarice and Bob about the decades of research they did on the history of the Coleman family.  The book that Clarice published in 2003 is available on this website.  (See the entry below for June 2, 2011).  The interview was recorded and an audio file of it will be uploaded to this website in the near future.

Coleman family grave markers are uncovered

I recently went to Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit to re-visit the plot owned by the Skerrett family.  Addie Coleman was the daughter of Calvert and Sarah Coleman.  She married William Skerrett.  When Addie's mother, Sarah, died in 1922, she was buried on the Skerrett plot in Woodlawn.  Eventually, Addie and William and their son William Jr. were also buried there.  Addie's daughter, Ruth, who was stillborn was buried there too.

When I visited the plot in April with my brother Larry, the only grave marker we could find was on the grave of Ruth.  On this visit, however, and with the help of a diligent cemetery employee, we poked around and dug up grass and dirt until we found markers for William, Addie, Willam Jr. and Sarah.

A hawk appeared in the tree branches above us prior to our search, perhaps as an omen that we should be watchful and vigilant.  Click here to see a photo of the hawk.  Click here to see photos of the grave markers.

An essay on Grandma Finney

An essay about Margaret Finney has been posted to the website.  It was written by Sara Basler in 1996 for a high school English class.

Margaret Finney was born as Margaret Paterson.  She became Margaret Coleman when she married Arthur Roy Coleman.  They had three children: Jean, Betty, and Murray.  After Roy died, Margaret married Laban "Jack" Finney.

Betty married Casper Basler and they had four children: Charles, John, Roger, and Connie.  Sara is the daughter of Charles Basler and his wife Jane.

The essay came to my attention during the interview of Betty Basler during the Family History Tour in April.  It is being published here with permission of the author.

Book available on Westfall-Coleman Family History

Clarice Coleman, wife of cousin Bob Coleman, published a book on Coleman family ancestry in 2003.  The Westfall and Coleman Family History is a masterpiece of genealogy research and storytelling.  Clarice has given me permission to put all but the last two chapters of the book online.  The full book, including entries on living people, is available to family members who ask me for it.

To view the index of entries for the complete book, click here.

To view or download the partial book, click here.

The stories are fascinating and give the reader a real idea of what life was like for our ancestors.  Many thanks to Clarice for her excellent work and for giving permission for me to share the book with others.

Coleman descendent charts added to website

It is helpful for descendents of an ancestor to see their place in the family tree at a glance.  Some descendent charts are so large they cannot be printed out on one page.  But they can be viewed "at a glance" online.

I have created "at a glance" pdf files for two sub-branches of the descendents of Calvert Coleman and Sarah Westfall.  One is for Samuel Jay Coleman (1868 - 1933) -- the third oldest child of Calvert and Sarah.  The other is for Arthur Roy Coleman (1884-1932) -- the youngest of the eight children of Calvert and Sarah.

The files will load on your computer screen at about 14% of the original size.  You can make the file larger by choosing 50% or 75% or "actual size" with the tool at the top of your screen.

To view the descendent chart for Samuel Jay Coleman, click here.

More members added to Basler family tree

Research shows that the paternal ancestors of Casper W. Basler have their roots in Switzerland.  Casper's paternal grandfather, also Casper Basler, was born on March 15, 1826 in the Roggwill area of Switzerland.  He was born to Kasper Basler and Verena Schweizer.

Although I have not yet been able to identify Kasper's parents, I have documented many Baslers in Switzerland, dating back to the late 1500s.

Click here for a pedigree chart for Charles Basler (b. 1942) showing his paternal and maternal ancestors going back four generations.

Click here for a descendent chart, showing the descendents of  Kasper Basler and Verena Schweizer.  This chart shows many cousins of whom the Baslers of Sanilac County may not have been aware.

Paterson family tree keeps growing

I had a nice conversation the other day with William Stacey, 91, who lives in Chatham, Ontario.  Bill is the oldest living member of the Paterson family.  Bill gave me some additional names to put on the family tree, including little Lillie McLean who was born in 2010.

Click here for the revised tree showing the descendents of Edward Paterson (1750-1832) and Jane Paterson (1765-1830).

Family tree hits the 1300 mark

The addition of Christopher Coleman (photo) to the family tree brings the number of our relatives and ancestors up to 1,300 now.  He was placed on the Dodd Coleman sub-branch of the "Descendents of Calvert Coleman and Sarah Westfall."  (See revised tree.)

Chris is the son of Dodd Coleman II (Duffy), the grandson of Dodd Coleman Sr. (Murray's half-brother) and the great grandson of Arthur Roy Coleman and Florence Curtis.

Chris, 37, is single and lives in Royal Oak.  He recently received his nursing degree and works as a paramedic.

The Stephan branch of the Steil family tree expands

Thanks to Patricia Young, a genealogy researcher whom I contacted through, I was able to obtain the names of more than 100 members of the Stephan sub-branch of the Steil family tree.  They are descendents of Mary Anna Steil and William J. Stephan.

Mary Anna was the aunt of Frank W. Steil (and sister of our great grandfather George P. Steil).  The Mary Anna and William Stephan family was very close to Frank Steil and his siblings.  I recall seeing pictures of Kathleen Steil on a horse at the Stephan farm in Traverse City when she was a girl.  The families were so close that the annual family reunion in Lake Orion in the 1940s and 1950s was called the Steil-Stephan Family Reunion.

As a result of this new addition to the Steil family tree, there are now 1,255 individuals and 387 family units listed on this website as descendents, ancestors, or relatives of Murray Coleman and Kathleen Steil.  They include members from the following main branches of our extended family tree: Coleman, Paterson, Hope, Lukaschewski, Steil, Stephan, and Basler.

Click here to see the expanded Steil family tree.  On that page you will find a link to a 17 page document that lists descendents of William Stephan and Mary Anna Steil, as well as a short biography of William Stephan and a short story written by one of his sons.

The Steil family tree keeps expanding

Thanks to contacts provided by Joyce Bernier (a researcher on and with detailed information provided by Renee Steil Sandoval, 33 people have been added to the Steil family tree.

The new people are descendents (and their spouses) of Eric Walter Steil.  Eric is the son of Gerhardt Steil and grandson of Valentine Steil.  Valentine was the brother of our great grandfather George P. Steil (and the uncle of our grandfather Frank W. Steil).

Click here to view the expanded Steil family tree.  When you open it, the pdf file also has an internal link (highlighted in blue) which takes you to a sub-branch (created by Renee) of the descendents of Eric Walter Steil.

As of today, I have identified 1,142 people who are relatives (ancestors or descendents) of Murray Coleman and Kathleen Steil.  This includes the following main branches of the family: Coleman, Paterson, Steil, and Lukaschewski.

The Lukaschewski family tree expands

Once Kay Coleman died in 2005, and her address book was misplaced, we were unable to connect with the one member of the Lukaschewski family with whom Kay had kept in contact -- her cousin Virginia Eschrich.  Virginia is the daughter of Helen Eschrich, formerly Helen Lukaschewski.  Helen was the sister of Catherine Lukaschewski Steil and the daughter of Rudolph and Anna Lukaschewski.

Through additional research on and with outreach via Facebook, I was able to connect with part of the Lukaschewski family.

Michelle Lukaschewski is a third cousin of the Coleman Nine.  She is a descendent of Albert August Lukaschewski.  Albert was the brother of our maternal great grandfather Rudolph Lukaschewski (our Grandma Steil's father).  Michelle lives in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  She was kind enough to give me the names of more than a dozen other descendents of Albert Lukaschewski, most of whom still live in Michigan.

Below is a link to the revised Lukaschewski Family Tree (descendents of Frank Lukaschewski and Louisa Kuhnke).  Frank and Louisa were born in Poland.  Louisa immigrated to Detroit with her son Rudolph in 1887.  Click here for the family tree.

In the coming weeks, I will be creating a new section of the website devoted exclusively to documents, photos, and historical records concerning the Lukaschewski family (descendents of Frank and Louisa).  I will post a notice on this page when it is ready for viewing.

As of today, there are 1093 individuals and 332 family units in the family history database on this website.

898 relatives listed in family tree

Earlier this year, when I started research into the family history of Murray F. Coleman and Kathleen J. Steil, I identified about 170 relatives (ancestors and descendents).  Further research increased that number to 500, then 740.  Now that I have spent many more hours in the last month researching "hints" from, the number has gone up to 874.  Pretty amazing!

I have created several reports which focus on our relatives from a variety of perspectives.  Here are links to the reports which I have generated:

1.  Ancestors of Thomas F. Coleman  (17 generations)
2.  Descendents of Edward Paterson (b. 1750 in Scotland)
3.  Descendents of Thomas Hope (b. 1766 in Scotland)
4.  Descendents of Patrick Coleman (b. 1820 in Ireland)
5.  Descendents of Carolus Steil (b. 1742 in Germany)
6.  Descendents of Frank Lukaschewski (b. 1843 in Poland)
7.  Descendents of Casper Basler (b. 1830 in Switzerland)

I found many new historical documents which will be organized and posted to the website in coming weeks.  When they are, a notice will be posted here with a link to the document and a description of its relevance.

Documents added for George and Katherine Steil

George Steil and Katherine Ackles immigrated to Illinois from Germany.  They married in 1886.  Katherine gave birth to their first child, George Jr. in 1887.  They later moved to Detroit where there second child, Anna, was born in 1889.

Two documents have been added to the website today. The first document is the marriage certificate for George and Katherine. The second is the birth certificate of George Jr.  Although his name was not entered on the certificate, the birth date matches the date on other records.

Both of these records show that George and Katherine lived in Pullman, Illinois.  Pullman was founded in 1880 and was developed as a model community, offering residences for employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company.  By the time George and Katherine were married, Pullman was a thriving town of 9,000 residents.
